2 wheat varieties developed by Indore IARI among 109 crops released by PM
Indore: Of the 109 high-yielding and climate-resilient varieties of crops released by thevarieties of crops on Sunday, two are wheat varieties developed by the Indore regional centre of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI).The Sharbati HI 1665, a low gluten index bread quality wheat, and the HI 8840, a premium pasta quality durum wheat, are the two high-yielding varieties developed from the Indore regional station of ICAR-IARI.These varieties are particularly well-suited for cultivation in the peninsular and central regions of India.Both these varieties are black and brown rust resistant, predominant wheat diseases in central and peninsular India.
These varieties are tolerant to heat and drought conditions, making them highly adaptable to the region’s climatic challenges while maintaining the potential for high yields.The Sharbati HI 1665 wheat variety is projected to deliver an average yield of 33 quintals per hectare, with the potential to reach 43.5 quintals per hectare under optimal conditions.“HI 1665 has a low gluten index (44) and this makes it a better choice for managing the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients. This is a climate-resilient variety with a low heat sensitivity index (0.98) and drought sensitivity index (0.91), so suitable for those areas also where water availability is limited and temperature goes up during the grain ripening stage, causing loss to the crop. It will fetch premium prices for the farmers,” said Dr JB Singh, developer of both wheat varieties and Principal Scientist at IARI, Indore.
Similarly, the HI 8840 variety is a biofortified, dual-purpose durum that boasts premium pasta quality and excellent chapati-making attributes. This variety is anticipated to yield an average of 30.2 quintals per hectare, with the potential to attain an impressive 39.9 quintals per hectare.A total of 109 varieties spanning 61 crops, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops, were released on Sunday. The field crops encompassed a wide range of essential agricultural produce, such as millets, oilseeds, forage crops, pulses, sugarcane, cotton fibre, and other vital crops. The horticultural segment featured an equally impressive array of fruits, spices, medicinal crops, vegetable crops, tuber crops, and flower crops, highlighting the comprehensive nature of the release.We also published the following articles recently
