22.5 LMT monthly sugar quota released for August 2025; August 2024 consumption was 25.20 LMT

On July 28, the Food Ministry allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22.5 LMT for August 2025, slightly higher than July’s 22 LMT but below August 2024 levels. With festive demand rising, experts anticipate a price hike of Rs. 100 per quintal, similar to the trend seen in July.
In an announcement on July 28, the Food Ministry allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22.5 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) for August 2025, which is lower than the quota allocated for August 2024.
In August 2024, the government had allocated a monthly sugar quota of 22 LMT for domestic sale. For July 2025, the allocation of sugar quota was also 22 LMT.

According to market experts, July saw an increase of Rs. 100 per quintal due to higher demand. The August quota appears to be lower than the expected demand, due to festivals like Raksha Bandhan, Krishna Janmashtami, Shravan and others; therefore, the market is likely to see an uptick in prices by Rs. 100 per quintal. Last year, in August, sugar consumption was 25.20 LMT.
