29,000MT rice from Vietnam reaches Chattogram

Bangladesh is importing 100,000 MT of rice from Vietnam under a government-to-government agreement, with 30,300 MT already delivered. The food ministry confirmed that testing of the latest batch has been completed, and unloading will begin soon. Despite being the world’s third-largest rice producer, Bangladesh faces production disruptions due to natural disasters, leading to increased imports to stabilize soaring rice prices.
Bangladesh is importing 100,000 MT of rice from Vietnam under the government-to-government agreement. Already, 30,300 MT of rice under this agreement has reached Bangladesh.
The food ministry said the authorities concerned have completed testing samples of the latest batch. “We’ll soon start unloading,” it said in a handout on Saturday (March 22).
Bangladesh, the world’s third-largest rice producer, typically produces nearly 40 million tonnes of rice a year to feed its population of 170 million. However, natural disasters often disrupt production and lead to increased dependency on imports.
Soaring rice prices prompted the interim government to import the staple to cool the market.
