35k kg PDS rice seized,4 smugglers apprehended
Chennai: On Monday night, the civil supplies CID seized 34,700 kilograms of subsidized rice intended for public distribution. The rice was intercepted on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway near Thiruvalam. The police apprehended four individuals: Shanmugam (52) of Gingee, Mohan (45), the driver, Shankar (45), the truck owner, and Harikrishnan (46), the truck cleaner. The rice, sourced from Madurantakam, Cheyyur, and Chennai suburbs, was being smuggled to Bangarupet, Karnataka. Shanmugam, a repeat offender in PDS rice smuggling, is the suspected mastermind. A case under the Essential Commodities Act has been registered, and further investigation is ongoing.

During investigation, police found that the PDS rice was sourced from different locations, including Madurantakam, Cheyyur, and Chennai suburban areas.The gang was planning to smuggle it to Bangarupet, Karnataka. The mastermind behind the smuggling, Shanmugam, is a previous offender in PDS rice smuggling.
