Lighthouse Green Fuels begins work on sustainable aviation fuel project on Teesside
Formal engagement has begun on Lighthouse Green Fuels’ (LGF) Development Consent Order (DCO) application for an advanced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility on Teesside. This will be the largest green-fuel facility in Europe and the most progressed in its development.
LGF is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) and requires consent from the Secretary of State for the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero via a DCO.
LGF will benefit Teesside, an area with a strong industrial heritage, highly skilled workforce, and established local supply chains, by creating over 1,000 jobs during construction and employing a further 240 full-time staff when the plant is operational.
The project is being developed by Lighthouse Green Fuels Ltd which is owned by global manufacturing and infrastructure group Alfanar.
At its Billingham site in Stockton-on-Tees, LGF will convert non-recyclable waste and waste biomass into advanced sustainable aviation fuel.
This SAF will then be blended with conventional jet fuel and distributed to UK airports to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation industry.
As the largest and most advanced green-fuel facility in Europe, LGF will convert over 1 million tonnes of non-recyclable waste and waste biomass annually to over 165 million litres of SAF for use on domestic and international flights.
The process will also produce 30 million litres of green naphtha, a green feedstock for use in Noaman Al Adhami, UK country head of Alfanar, said: “We are delighted to begin formal engagement for the Lighthouse Green Fuels project on Teesside. The project will deliver a Europe-leading facility that will save millions of tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the atmosphere, create over a thousand jobs, and boost local supply chains.
“Passenger numbers are set to quadruple by 2050 and the clock is ticking on delivering the government’s policy on Jet Zero. It is crucial that we accelerate the production of SAF to meet growing demand as the UK looks to increase its energy security and rise to the challenge of decarbonising the aviation industry at the same time. Lighthouse Green Fuels will produce the jet fuel for Net Zero.”
The next stage in the pre-application process will involve LGF consulting local communities and businesses on its plans. The feedback received as part of the consultation process will be used to help shape the final application, which will be submitted to the government in 2024.
