Delayed ethanol plant: sugarcane farmers to protest from Jan 2
Say there was no ‘response’ from government
Ponda: With no ‘response’ coming from the state government following their ‘ultimatum’, the sugarcane farmers have decided to launch their agitation from January 2, 2024 at the Dharbandora sugar factory complex, demanding an ethanol plant project at the complex.
President of Sugarcane Farmers Association Rajendra Dessai made the announcement over the agitation after he held a meeting with the committee members. Dessai said that the state government is not in a mood to listen to the grievances and demands of the sugarcane farmers, and considering that, “we have decided to launch an agitation at the sugar factory at Dharbandora.”
He said “It has been more than two months since the farmers introduced a party to the state government interested in setting up an ethanol plant at Dharbandora.”
But the government hasn›t responded to the proposal yet, he added.

“There is neither a positive response nor a negative response from the government and that has put the farmers into confusion. And, we are demanding with the government to make it clear to us,” Dessai said.
Around 120 sugarcane farmers were detained by the Ponda police in July this year after they blocked Ponda-Belgaum NH during their protest wherein they demanded a written assurance from the government on Sanjivani Sugar Factory.
Following that, the Chief Minister called the sugarcane farmers for a meeting in Panaji and during that meeting he told them that no party was willing to set up an ethanol plant, owing to the present state of the factory structure and not enough sugarcane cultivation in the state.
The Chief Mimister had asked the farmers to get the parties interested in setting up an ethanol plant in the state and that the government would provide the required support.
