About 10% of contaminated waste removed from AltEn but more expected in spring
In Nebraska, the Lincoln Star newspaper reports that about 10% of the contaminated solid waste trapped under cement at the shuttered AltEn ethanol plant, more than 10,000 tons, has been successfully removed and taken to a local landfill. The environmental services company contracted to remove 24,000 tons of waste has run into challenges with securing the bentonite required to solidify the contaminated wet cake before it could be transported to the landfill, as well as problems with the machinery mixing the bentonite. Work is now on hold until the spring when the wet cake thaws again.
