UNICA: Ethanol Production, Sales Up In Early March

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced sugarcane processing during the first half of March was up significantly when compared to the same period of last year. Ethanol production and sales were also up during the two-week period.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 2.22 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of March, up from 605,290 metric tons processed during the same period of last year. Total sugarcane processing since the beginning of the 2023-‘24 harvest season, which began April 1, 2023, was at 649.39 million metric tons, up 19.4% when compared to the same period of the previous harvest season. 

Mills in the region produced 366.62 million liters (90.85 million gallons) of ethanol during the first half of March, up 38.57% when compared to the same period of 2023. Production included 336.08 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 104%, and 30.55 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 69.39%. Corn ethanol production accounted for 259.04 million liters, or 71% percent of total production, up 8.57% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Total ethanol production since the beginning of the 2023-’24 harvest season reached 33.07 billion liters, up 15.9%. Production included 20.06 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 22.32%, and 13 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 7.22%. Corn ethanol accounted for 5.96 billion liters of production, up 40.89%. 

Mills in the region sold 1.46 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of March, up 51.38% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales included 998.48 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 84.46%, and 466.51 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 9.4%. 

Domestic sales were at 1.39 billion liters for the two-week period, including 933.84 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 84.29%, and 462.78 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 12.9%. 

Total sales since the beginning of the 2023-’24 harvest season reached 31.24 billion liters, up 12.64% when compered to the same period of the previous harvest season. Sales included 19.09 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, up 20.96%, and 12.15 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 1.64%.
