UNICA: Sugarcane Processing, Ethanol Production Up As 2024’-25 Harvest Season Begins

Brazil’s 2024-’25 sugarcane harvest commenced with increased processing and ethanol production, as reported by UNICA. In the south-central region, sugarcane processing rose by 14.1%, yielding 840.73 million liters of ethanol, with hydrous ethanol up by 39.36%. Domestic ethanol sales surged by 41.93%, while exports slightly declined by 6.26%. Total ethanol sales for the first half of April reached 1.4 billion liters, with hydrous ethanol dominating the market.

Brazil’s 2024-’25 sugarcane harvest season kicked off on April 1. UNICA, the country’s sugarcane industry association, said sugarcane processing and ethanol production were both up during the first two-weeks of the harvest season. 

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 15.81 million tons of sugarcane during the first half of April, up 14.1% when compared to the same period of last year. 

Mills in the region produced 840.73 million liters (222.1 million gallons) of ethanol during the two-week period, up 7.2% when compared to the same period of 2023. Production included 693.4 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 39.36%, and 147.3 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 48.61%. Corn ethanol accounted for 32%, or 270.5 million liters of production, up 12.95% when compared to the same period of last year. 

According to UNICA, mills in the south-central region sold 1.35 billion liters of ethanol into the domestic market during the first half of April, up 41.93% when compared to the same period of last year. Domestic sales included 902.35 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 61.59%, and 488.43 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 14.02%. 

Approximately 52.1 million liters of ethanol were sold into export markets during the period, down 6.26% when compared to last year. Volumes destined for export included 51.09 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 30.5%, and 1.01 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 93.8%. 

Total sales for the first half of April reached 1.4 billion liters, up 39.28%, including 953.445 million liters of hydrous ethanol, up 59.55%, and 449.44 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 9.7%.
