Kazakhstan increases imports of Russian wheat and flour
According to APK-Inform, Kazakhstan has seen a rise in imports of Russian wheat and flour. From September to April of the 2023/24 marketing year, Kazakhstan imported 1.59 million tonnes of Russian wheat, up from 1.47 million tonnes the previous year. Additionally, imports of Russian wheat flour surged to 54.7 thousand tonnes from just 11.8 thousand tonnes in the same period last year. Despite bans on some imports, challenges with illegal supplies persist.
Kazakhstan is increasing the imports of wheat and flour of Russian origin, APK-Inform reports, citing the official statistics.
Thus, in 8 months of 2023/24 MY Kazakhstan supplied 1.59 mln tonnes of wheat from Russia (down from 1.47 mln tonnes in the same period of 2022/23 MY and 1.37 mln tonnes in 8 months of 2021/22 MY).
In April of this year, the figure also exceeded the last year’s one – about 249 thsd tonnes, compared to 203.8 thsd tonnes in April 2023.
At the same time, the imports of Russian wheat flour to Kazakhstan also increased significantly – while in September-April of 2022/23 MY it amounted to only 11.8 thsd tonnes, in the same period of 2023/24 MY it reached 54.7 thsd tonnes. It should be noted that the above figures reflect only the “white”, legal imports of Russian grain to Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, the problem of illegal wheat supplies from Russia remains a pressing issue in Kazakhstan.
In April of this year, Kazakhstan extended the ban on wheat imports into the country, including from the EAEU member states by road, water and rail, for another 6 months. The only exception is rail deliveries to poultry and flour mills for production and consumption.
