Bijnor to get a new sugar mill
BIJNOR: A sugarcane mill will be set up in Changipur village of Uttar Pradesh’s Bijnor, a district known as the sugar bowl of the north, by October this year, said the district cane officer Prabhu Narayan Singh on Sunday.
The mill is being constructed by the Bindal group on 300 bighas of agricultural land at a cost of Rs 630 crore.
Jitendra Kumar Malik, general manager at the mill, said, “We are setting up a sugar mill and distillery in Changipur village of the Noorpur area. The mill will crush at least one lakh quintals of sugarcane per day. Besides, the distillery unit will produce ethanol. The plant will start functioning from October 15 this year.”
Anil Kumar Yadav, a farmer from Noorpur, told TOI, ‘The new sugar mill will prove to be a boon for sugarcane growers as it will share a load of other mills during the crushing season. Cane farmers will be able to harvest their crops in time.”
At present, there are nine sugar mills in the district, of which one is cooperative and the rest are private. These mills crush over 6.5 lakh quintals of cane daily during the crushing season that lasts from November to May.
“Binor stands second in the state in sugarcane cultivation after Lakhimpur. There are 2.5 lakh hectares of cane cultivation areas here,” said the district cane officer.
