Ahmedabad: FSSAI issued notices to 55 edible oil manufacturers, restraining them from using old tins. These 55 include almost all refiners and re-packers.

Sources said the Gujarat food and drug control administration (FDCA) and FSSAI have asked manufacturers to only use new tins for edible oils, but many are still reusing tins.

FSSAI notice states, “In the interest of food safety and to prevent potential hazards from metal contact with food, it has come to our attention that many food business operators (FBOs) involved in the manufacturing, re-labelling, repackaging, trading or any other food handling activities (specifically edible oil) continue to use old tin containers for packaging purposes.

As stipulated in the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging) Regulation of 2018, tin containers once used, shall not be re-used for packaging of food.” H G Koshia, commissioner of the Gujarat FDCA, said, “According to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, the reuse of container tins for packaging food is prohibited.”
