The federal government has suspended customs, levies, and taxes on critical food commodities, including maize, wheat, husked brown rice, and cowpeas, for 150 days, Minister Abubakar Kyari announced in Abuja.
This move, part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan, aims to achieve food security and economic stability. Kyari assured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to addressing food inflation and hunger. Additionally, a committee was launched to implement livestock development policies under the National Livestock Transformation Plan.
The federal government has declared the suspension of customs, levies, and taxes on certain critical food commodities imported across land and maritime borders.
Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Abubakar Kyari said this at a news briefing at the National press Centre in Abuja on Monday.
Kyari disclosed that the listed food items, which include maize, wheat, husked brown rice, and cowpeas, will enjoy a 150-day Duty-Free Import Window.
He added that the move is part of the Presidential Accelerated Stabilization and Advancement Plan, which is aimed at achieving food security and economic stability in the country.
According to the minister, the government has been working nonstop to address the food inflation situation, which has caused prices to soar to previously unheard-of heights.
In light of this, Kyari gave Nigerians assurances that the government is dedicated to guaranteeing food security and that no one goes to bed hungry.
Kyari also said the federal government has also inaugurated the Renewed Hope National Livestock Transformation Implementation Committee to develop and implement policies that prioritize livestock development and align with the National Livestock Transformation Plan.
