Chhattisgarh Govt Puts 2.84 Mn Tonne Of Rice In Central Pool
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has set a goal of buying 5.86 million tonnes of rice from the state for the central pool
The government of Chhattisgarh has placed 2.84 million tonnes (mt) of rice in the central pool for the kharif marketing season (KMS) 2022-23.
The Food Corporation of India (FCI) has set a goal of buying 5.86 million tonnes of rice from the state for the central pool. In the kharif season, Chhattisgarh will be the second largest rice contributor behind Punjab. The FCI would purchase 12.2 million tonnes of rice from Punjab.
“So far, 4.71 mt of rice has been deposited in the central pool,” a state government spokeswoman said. 2.84 million tonnes have been placed with the FCI, while 1.86 million tonnes have been deposited with the Civil Supplies Corporation. The latter has used the stock for social programmes such as allocating grain to the Public Distribution System and distributing grain at subsidised prices.
According to state government officials, due to excellent administration, there has been a 100 per cent offtake of paddy acquired from farmers at a support price for custom milling. Custom milled rice (CMR) is also being deposited in the central pool at a rapid speed, they noted. The state was given a goal of depositing 6.52 million tonnes of rice in the previous marketing season.
CMR is produced by milling paddy obtained from state governments and the FCI. Many states, including Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Haryana, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, acquire paddy through agencies, and the resulting rice is distributed to state governments and the FCI through rice millers.
In Chhattisgarh, the state government purchased 10.7 million tonnes of paddy from registered farmers at the minimum support price (MSP). 2.34 million farmers in the state have sold their paddy at the support price. The Chhattisgarh government has spent Rs 220.67 billion on paddy procurement at MSP.
Milling the obtained rice, according to officials, has also been a hurdle that the government has successfully overcome. “The state government’s decision to give millers incentives for custom milling at Rs 120 per quintal has also resulted in a surge,” they added.
249 new millers have registered for custom milling in the KMS 2022-23. It has been a godsend to the state government because new mills create jobs for the people, so bolstering the rural economy.
