EIA: US biofuel capacity expands in May

US biofuel capacity expanded in May, reaching 24.73 billion gallons per year, up 621 million gallons from April and 1.67 billion gallons from May 2023. Ethanol capacity rose to 18.133 billion gallons, while biodiesel capacity increased to 2.022 billion gallons. Renewable diesel and associated fuels capacity jumped to 4.575 billion gallons. However, feedstock consumption fell to 26.355 billion pounds, with corn consumption decreasing to 25.502 billion pounds and grain sorghum consumption dropping to 91 million pounds.

Operable U.S. biofuel capacity expanded in May, with gains for ethanol, biodiesel and renewable diesel, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on July 31. Feedstock consumption was down.

U.S. biofuels capacity reached 24.73 billion gallons per year in May, up 621 MMgy when compared to the previous month and up 1.67 billion gallons per year when compared to May 2023.

Fuel ethanol capacity reached 18.133 billion gallons per year in May, up 144 MMgy from April and up 433 MMgy when compared to the same month of last year.

Biodiesel capacity reached 2.022 billion gallons in May, up 31 MMgy when compared to April, but down 60 MMgy when compared to May 2023.

Capacity for renewable diesel and associated fuels, including renewable heating oil, renewable jet fuel, renewable naphtha, renewable gasoline and other biofuels and biointermediates, reached 4.575 billion gallons per year in May, up 446 MMgy when compared to the previous month and up 1.297 billion gallons per year when compared to May of last year.

U.S. biofuel facilities consumed approximately 26.355 billion pounds of feedstocks in May, down from 26.826 billion pounds in April and 27.633 billion pounds in May of last year. Consumption of feedstocks traditionally used to produce ethanol was down in May when compared to the previous month, but up when compared to May 2023. The consumption of feedstocks traditionally used to produce biomass-based diesel in May was down when compared to April, but up from May of last year.

U.S. biofuel producers consumed 25.502 billion pounds of corn in May, down from 23.664 billion pounds in April, but up from 24.585 billion pounds in May 2023. Grain sorghum consumption fell to 91 million pounds in May, down from 101 million pounds the previous month and 258 million pounds in May of last year.

Biofuel producers consumed 1.076 billion pounds of soybean oil in May, including 597 million pounds consumed by biodiesel producers and 479 million pounds consumed by renewable diesel plants. Soybean oil consumption was at 1.07 billion pounds in May, with 505 million pounds of that volume consumed by biodiesel producers and 565 million pounds consumed by renewable diesel plants; and at 1.141 billion pounds in May 2023, with 663 million pounds of that volume consumed by biodiesel producers and 478 million pounds consumed by renewable diesel plants.
