Tanzania eyes one million tonnes sugar production by by 2030
Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan aims to double sugar production, targeting 1 million tonnes by 2030, with a focus on the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) market. Current demand stands at 650,000 tonnes, with 550,000 tonnes expected in production this year. The Mtibwa Sugar Factory’s new irrigation dam will boost production from 15,000 tonnes in 2017 to 80,000 tonnes in 2024/25. The government has provided tax exemptions and infrastructure support to enhance sugar production and access key markets.
Dar es Salaam: President Samia Suluhu Hassan has announced her government’s ambitious plan to double sugar production, with a strategic emphasis on leveraging the extensive market opportunities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), reports The Citizen.
Currently, Tanzania’s brown sugar demand stands at 650,000 tonnes annually. This year, the country expects to produce 550,000 tonnes, with goals to increase production to 750,000 tonnes by the 2025-26 fiscal year and to one million tonnes by 2030.
During the inauguration of the Mtibwa Sugar Factory irrigation dam, President Hassan emphasized the significant technological investments made by Mtibwa Sugar Company Limited, which has increased production capacity from 15,000 tonnes in 2017 to over 80,000 tonnes for the 2024/25 financial year.
“We are enhancing our transport and logistics infrastructure to access key markets, particularly focusing on the DRC, which offers substantial opportunities,” said President Hassan. She highlighted the government’s support for the sugar sector over the past decade, including substantial tax exemptions.
