In a significant move, Rajya Sabha MP Sangeeta Balwant has called for the revival of the closed Nandganj sugar mill in Gazipur.
While addressing the issue in Parlimanet, Balwant drew the attention of the government to the establishment of the sugar mill in 1978 in the village of Sihori, following the recommendations of the Patel Commission. The mill operated successfully for nearly 19 years, producing sugar from sugarcane. This operation not only provided job opportunities to the unemployed but also contributed to the prosperity of sugarcane farmers in the region. During that period, farmers in Gazipur and surrounding districts focused on sugarcane cultivation and thrived.
However, in 1997, the mill was shut down for unspecified reasons, leading to widespread disappointment among sugarcane farmers and resulting in thousands losing their jobs.
She emphasized the need for the government to either revive the Nandganj sugar mill or implement an alternative employment-generating scheme to address the concerns of the local community.
