Official data indicates that in July 2024, PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) received 60.4 crore liters of ethanol under the Ethanol Blending Program (EBP), and a total of 461.3 crore liters from November 2023 to July 2024. The amount of ethanol blended under the EBP in July 2024 was 64.7 crore liters, with a cumulative total of 479.1 crore liters from November 2023 to July 2024.

Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution & New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, recently announced that the annual ethanol production capacity has increased to 1,589 crore liters.

The government aims to achieve 20 percent ethanol blending by 2025. To meet this target, approximately 1,016 crore liters of ethanol will be needed, while the total ethanol requirement, including for other uses, is projected to be 1,350 crore liters. Consequently, about 1,700 crore liters of ethanol production capacity must be established by 2025, assuming plants operate at 80 percent efficiency. This demand forecast takes into account the growth in petrol-based vehicles, including two-wheelers and passenger vehicles, as well as the anticipated sales of motor spirit.
