Untimely rain damage 6,000 MT of wheat in Madhya Pradesh

BHOPAL: The unseasonal rain has damaged around 6,000-7,000 metric tonnes of wheat at procurement centers in half a dozen districts.
This is the primary information and actual figures are still being collected. Officials however claim that this wheat has not sustained major damage and is recoverable, said sources. Wheat procurement in Madhya Pradesh started on March 25, this year will continue till May 10.
The procurement is done through co-operative societies and markfed and MP civil supplies corporation are two nodal agencies which are involved into procurement. While Markfed is overseeing procurement in only two divisions of state, civil supplies corporation is nodal agency facilitating procurement in other four divisions of state. MP civil supplies corporation has also instructed the district collectors that if need be, they could stop procurement for the time in the view of bad weather.
The districts where wheat has been affected include, Ujjain, Panna, Seoni, Narmadapuram and Jabalpur districts, where between 6,000 and 7,000 metric tone of wheat is said to be affected, added sources. Managing director of the civil supplies, corporation, Tarun Pithode said, “We were alert ahead of the information from the meteorological department. Appropriate arrangements were also made and thus, there has been very little effect, an exact figure of wheat that has been affected due to sudden rain has been sought from the districts. And prima facie even the small quantity of wheat that has been affected is in recoverable condition.”
