Six WTO nations quiz India’s export curbs on rice, wheat
Six countries, including the US, UK, and Japan, have inquired about India’s plans to lift or ease its non-basmati white rice export ban, and whether it might be replaced by an export duty. Japan has also questioned India’s electricity subsidies for farmers at the WTO. Additionally, Canada has asked about the impact of India’s wheat export restrictions on food security and details on agricultural export enterprises. Over 40 questions about India’s export restrictions have been raised since 2022.

Ottawa has also sought details on the role of agricultural exporting enterprises such as National Cooperative Exports Limited (NCEL) and the National Agricultural Cooperative Federation of India (NAFED) on the value and volume of their exports, export prices and destination.
“Over 40 questions have been posed to India about its export restriction measures since 2022,” the official told ET.
