10 States report winter wheat emergence

USDA’s Crop Progress report shows 4% of U.S. winter wheat has emerged, trailing the five-year average. Washington leads with 22%, followed by Nebraska at 14%. Colorado, South Dakota, Texas, and other states report slower or average progress. Oklahoma has yet to report emergence, while some states like Indiana and Kansas are slightly behind their usual pace.

Winter wheat is beginning to emerge across the U.S., according to the latest Crop Progress report published by USDA. Ten of the top 18 winter wheat growing states reported emergence in the Crop Progress report published Sept. 23.

Nationally, 4% of the winter wheat crop has emerged. This is 1 percentage point behind the five-year average and trails last year’s emergence pace by 2 percentage points.

Washington

USDA said 22% of the winter wheat crop in Washington state had emerged, a surge of 13 percentage points from the week prior. This year’s emergence pace in Washington is ahead of the five-year average of 16% and last year’s emergence pace of 17%.

Nebraska

In Nebraska, 14% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged, according to the Sept. 23 Crop Progress report. That’s up 11 percentage points from the previous week, and double the five-year average. Last year at this time, 12% of the Nebraska winter wheat crop had emerged.

Colorado

USDA reported 9% of the winter wheat crop in Colorado had emerged the week ending Sept. 22, up 6 percentage points from the week prior. This is 8 percentage points behind the five-year average. Last year at this time, 16% of the Colorado winter wheat crop had emerged.

South Dakota

In South Dakota, 7% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged, according to the Sept. 23 Crop Progress report. That’s 1 percentage point ahead of the five-year average. Last year at this time, 4% of South Dakota winter wheat crop had emerged.

Texas

Texas reported its first winter wheat emergence of the season the week ending Sept. 22. With 5% emerged, progress is equal to this time last year and slightly ahead of the five-year average of 4%.

Montana

USDA reported 4% of the winter wheat crop in Montana had emerged the week ending Sept. 22, equal to the five-year average. Last year at this time, no emergence had been reported in the state.

Oregon

In Oregon, 3% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged. That’s equal to the five-year average and last year at this time.

Idaho

USDA reported 2% of Idaho’s winter wheat crop had emerged the week ending Sept. 22. This is slightly behind the five-year average of 4%, but equal to last year at this time.

Kansas

In Kansas, 2% of the state’s winter wheat crop had emerged. That’s slightly behind both last year at this time and the five-year average of 3%.

Indiana

Indiana farmers reported the first winter wheat emergence of the season the week ending Sept. 22. Just 1% of the crop is out of the ground. This is equal progress to last year at this time and slightly ahead of the five-year average.

Oklahoma

Last year at this time, 4% of Oklahoma’s winter wheat crop had emerged. No emergence progress has been reported for the 2024 season.
