BKU protests over alleged irregularities in sugarcane panel elections

Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) members protested in Meerut over alleged irregularities in the sugarcane committee elections, where 102 candidates’ nominations were cancelled. BKU leader Rakesh Tikait threatened to block highways if the issue wasn’t resolved, demanding a fair election for farmers. Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also raised concerns about possible rigging in the process.

Lucknow: The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) members organised a massive protest, with some members forcefully entering the Partapur police station on Friday night, over alleged irregularities in the sugarcane committee election process, reported The Statesman. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav also raised concerns over reported rigging in the same elections.

According to reports from Meerut, tensions flared after the nomination papers of 102 candidates for the position of Sugarcane Committee delegate were cancelled. Despite attempts by senior officials, including the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the Superintendent of Police (SP) City, and administrative officers, to calm the situation, BKU members continued their sit-in protest at the Partapur police station. The protestors are demanding that the irregularities in the nominations be addressed.

BKU spokesperson Rakesh Tikait joined the protest on Saturday and vowed to escalate the demonstration. “Farmers will block highways in protest,” he warned. Tikait emphasized that the sugarcane committee election is a public matter and must be conducted fairly. “This election belongs to the farmers, the village, and the people. If there is any dishonesty, we will continue to protest,” he declared.
