Discussion to take place regarding potential relief for sugar exports: Media Report

The Indian government is considering relief for sugar exports, with phased quotas being discussed. A Committee of Secretaries will review the current export ban. The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) supports lifting the ban, citing ample stock and high international prices due to Brazil’s production issues, presenting a good opportunity for the Indian sugar industry.

In a new development for the sugar industry, the government is set to deliberate on sugar exports. According to a news report from Zee Business, a discussion will take place regarding potential relief for sugar exports. If approved, quotas may be issued in a phased manner.

As per the media report, a meeting of the Committee of Secretaries is also scheduled for this week, where the sugar export ban will be reviewed for possible relief.

Sugar industry bodies have urged the government to permit sugar exports. The Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has also requested permission for sugar exports, stating that the country has ample sugar stock to meet domestic consumption, export demands, and the ethanol blending program.

Massive fires and weather conditions in Brazil will impact sugar production in that country, and currently, international prices are high, which presents an export opportunity for the Indian sugar industry.
