TN govt releases Rs 247 crore for sugarcane farmers
The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹247 crore as a special incentive for 1.2 lakh sugarcane farmers who supplied cane to public, cooperative, and private sugar mills during the 2023-24 crushing season. Farmers will receive ₹3,134.75 per metric tonne, which includes an additional ₹215 over the Union government’s fair and remunerative price (FRP) of ₹2,919.75 per tonne. The Directorate of Sugar will coordinate the disbursement of funds, with district-level committees overseeing the process.
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu govt on Saturday issued an order to release Rs 247 crore as a special incentive price for sugarcane farmers who supplied produce to sugar mills during the 2023-24 crushing season. This decision will benefit 1.2 lakh sugarcane farmers in the state.”The farmers who supplied cane to two public sector, 12 cooperative and 16 private sugar mills in the state during the 2023-24 crushing season will be paid Rs 3,134.75 per metric tonne,” said an official release.
During the agriculture budget presentation earlier this year, agriculture minister MRK Panneerselvam had announced that the state govt would provide a special incentive price of Rs 215 per metric tonne of sugarcane, in addition to the fair and remunerative price (FRP) set by the Union govt. The Union govt’s FRP is fixed at Rs 2,919.75 per metric tonne for the crushing season 2023-24.The release said efforts were under way to disburse the special incentive price swiftly upon collection of details of eligible farmers who supplied sugarcane to the mills during the crushing season. The Directorate of Sugar would scrutinise the data, and district-level committees led by the respective district collectors would subsequently recommend the special incentive price, it said.
