Cane burning has increased by 10% – FSC
The Fiji Sugar Corporation’s 2024 Annual Report has revealed that cane burning has increased over the previous season by 10 percent and it continues to be an area of grave concern affecting both the productivity of farms and milling efficiency.

The report states that this is impacting the profitability of both farmers and FSC and there is a need to change crop management practices and strong policy directives to ensure that a significant reduction in cane burning is achieved within a definitive time frame.
CEO of the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji Vinesh Kumar earlier stated that about 30 percent of the sugar cane that is supplied to the major mills is burnt.
FSC is urging the communities to report any suspicious behaviour to authorities and those found committing this will face strict legal consequences.
