ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute celebrates its 113th Foundation Day
The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute celebrated its 113th Foundation Day on October 28, 2024. Key attendees included Dr. R. Viswanathan and Dr. V. Venkatasubramanian, who highlighted the institute’s advancements in sugarcane research. Dr. P. Govindaraj honored founder Dr. C.A. Barber’s contributions, while Dr. Major Singh praised the institute for maintaining its prominence since 1912, noting the enduring success of ‘Co’ sugarcane varieties in tropical and sub-tropical regions, which remain influential domestically and internationally.

Dr R. Viswanathan, Director, ICAR-Indian Institute of Sugarcane Research, Lucknow, and Dr V. Venkatasubramanian, Director, ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute Zone-11, Bengaluru, served as the guests of honor during the programme.
Dr P. Govindaraj, Director, ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, emphasized the significant contributions of Dr C.A. Barber, the Institute’s Founder-Director, to sugarcane agriculture.
Dr Major Singh, Member (Plant Science), Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, delivered the ‘Foundation Day address’ and lauded the Institute for sustaining its glory for the past 112 years, since 1912. He stated that the ‘Co’ varieties still maintain supremacy in several foreign countries. ‘Co’ and ‘Co’ allied varieties dominate the sugarcane scene in the country’s tropical and sub-tropical regions, he added.
