Srilanka Govt. extends Rs. 50/kg levy on imported sugar until Dec 31
Sri Lanka’s government has extended a levy of Rs. 50 per kilogram on imported sugar until December 31, as announced in a Gazette notification by Finance Minister Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Originally due to expire on November 1, this levy was introduced to help stabilize local prices amidst global sugar price fluctuations. However, former minister Manusha Nanayakkara criticized this move, arguing that the government is maintaining taxes on essential goods like sugar, despite prior pledges to reduce such taxes.
The government has extended the special commodity levy of Rs. 50 per kilogram on imported sugar until December 31, through a Gazette notification issued by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as Minister of Finance.
Originally set to expire on November 1, the levy, introduced last year, aims to stabilize local prices amid global market fluctuations.
Former minister Manusha Nanayakkara criticized the decision, stating that the government is retaining taxes on essential items despite previous promises to reduce them, specifically highlighting the tax on sugar imports.
