RFA applauds formation of National Energy Council
President-elect Donald Trump plans to create the National Energy Council, chaired by North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who is also nominated for Secretary of the Interior. The council aims to streamline energy permitting, boost investments, and cut regulations to achieve “U.S. energy dominance.” Burgum’s private-sector experience includes leadership in tech and real estate. The Renewable Fuels Association welcomed the council, emphasizing the need for collaboration across federal agencies to enhance renewable fuels, carbon capture, and energy security strategies.
President-elect Donald Trump on Nov. 15 announced plans to launch the National Energy Council, which aims to oversee a path to “U.S. energy dominance.” North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum will chair the council. Trump has also announced plans to nominate Burgum to serve as Secretary of the Interior.
According to information posted by Trump to Truth Social, the National Energy Council will consist of all departments and agencies involved in the permitting, production, generation, distribution, regulation, and transportation of all forms of American energy. “This council will oversee the path to U.S. energy dominance by cutting red tape, enhancing private sector investments across all sectors of the economy, and by focusing on innovation over longstanding, but totally unnecessary, regulation,” Trump wrote. “With U.S. energy dominance, we will drive down inflation, win the A.I. arms race with China (and others), and expand American diplomatic power to end all wars across the world.”
Burgum has served as North Dakota governor since 2016. He previously worked in the private sector in positions focused on technology and real estate development. Burgum in 1983 helped lead Great Plains Software from a small startup company to a large tech firm. He served as CEO of Great Plans through its initial public offering in 1997 and acquisition by Microsoft Corp. in 2001 and served as a senior vice president at Microsoft through 2007. Burgum in 2006 founded the Kilbourne Group, a real estate development firm, and in 2008 co-founded Arthur Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in mission-driven software companies.
The Renewable Fuels Association on Nov. 15 welcomed the formation of the National Energy Council. “We applaud the formation of the National Energy Council and the appointment of Governor Burgum as its chairman,” said Geoff Cooper, president and CEO of the RFA. “He fully understands the importance of adopting an all-of-the-above energy strategy that includes renewable fuels, carbon capture and sequestration, and other innovative approaches to energy and economic security. We look forward to working with him in this new capacity. For far too long, federal agencies have operated in siloes when it comes to energy policy and regulation—we are excited by the prospect of bringing better coordination and collaboration to these important issues.”
