Bangladesh to import 25,000 tonnes of sugar from Pakistan
Bangladesh will import 25,000 tonnes of sugar from Pakistan, arriving next month at Chittagong Port. This marks a notable shift as Bangladesh previously sourced sugar from India, whose exports are now restricted. Pakistan, under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s approval, plans to export 600,000 tonnes of sugar this year to various nations, including Central Asia, Thailand, and Gulf states.

According to officials, this marks the first time in many years that the Pakistani sugar industry is sending such a large quantity of sugar to Bangladesh, as reported by local media in Pakistan.
Previously, Bangladesh had been importing sugar from India, but currently, sugar exports from India are restricted.
This year, the Pakistan sugar industry signed agreements to export approximately 600,000 tonnes of sugar with the approval of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Of this amount, 70,000 tonnes will be sent to Central Asian countries, and Thailand has purchased 50,000 tonnes. According to Majid Malik, a representative of Pakistan’s sugar dealers, Gulf states, Arab countries, and several African nations have also signed agreements to buy sugar from Pakistan.
Pakistan is also successfully exporting sugar that was once smuggled through Afghanistan to Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan. More than 80 sugar mills in Pakistan began sugar production on December 2, 2024, reported The News.
