Maharashtra: 143 mills begin crushing operations, sugar production exceeds 8 lakh tonnes

As of December 5, Maharashtra’s 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season reports 105.47 lakh tonnes crushed, producing 8.05 lakh tonnes of sugar with a 7.64% recovery rate. Kolhapur leads in recovery (8.86%), while Solapur ranks third in crushing with the lowest recovery (6.85%). Pune, Ahmednagar, Nanded, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions also contributed significantly. Nagpur division remains inactive.

As the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season in Maharashtra picks up pace, more sugar mills are beginning operations. According to the commissionerate office, as of December 5, a total of 105.47 lakh tonnes of sugarcane has been crushed, yielding 80.56 lakh quintals (8.05 lakh tonnes) of sugar. The state’s average sugar recovery rate stands at 7.64%.

In the Pune division, 26.56 lakh tonnes of sugarcane have been crushed, producing 20.47 lakh quintals of sugar, with an average recovery rate of 7.71%. A total of 26 mills are operational in the region, including 15 cooperative and 11 private mills.

Meanwhile, the Kolhapur division has 30 mills in operation, consisting of 20 cooperative and 10 private mills. The region has crushed 21.65 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 19.19 lakh quintals of sugar, with the highest recovery rate in the state at 8.86%.

Solapur ranks third in sugarcane crushing, with 26 mills, including 10 cooperative and 16 private mills, in operation. The region has crushed 18.59 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 12.73 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 6.85%.

The Ahmednagar division ranks fourth, with 20 mills in operation, including 12 cooperative and 8 private mills. These mills have crushed 15.22 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, yielding 10.76 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.07%, higher than that of Solapur.

The Nanded and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar divisions are ranked fifth and sixth, respectively in terms of crushing. In Nanded, 25 mills, including 8 cooperative and 17 private mills, have crushed 13.07 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 10.21 lakh quintals of sugar, with a recovery rate of 7.81%. In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, 15 mills, including 8 cooperative and 7 private mills, have crushed 9.26 lakh tonnes of sugarcane, producing 6.37 lakh quintals of sugar.

Currently, no mills have started crushing in the Nagpur division.
