Tamil Nadu : Thanjavur cane farmers protest for compensation to damaged crops
Farmers in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, protested demanding compensation for sugarcane crops damaged by Cyclone Fengal’s rains. Crops in several villages, including Ammapettai and Vadakuthoppu, were affected. While officials have surveyed paddy fields, no assessments have been made for sugarcane damage. The Tamil Nadu Farmers Association has requested a review and compensation for the affected crops. The Agriculture Department has stated that a report will be submitted after assessing the damage. If severe, farmers will be compensated.
Trichy: Members of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association undertook a protest in front of the Thanjavur district collector’s office on Monday demanding compensation for the damaged sugarcane crops.Farmers said sugarcane crops ready for harvest ahead of the Pongal festival were severely damaged. “Due to the recent rain because of Cyclone Fengal, several hundred acres of sugarcane crops ready for harvest were damaged in Ammapettai, Puthur, Puliyakkudi, and Vadakuthoppu villages. The state govt should provide compensation for the damaged crops,” R Senthil Kumar, Thanjavur district deputy secretary of the Tamil Nadu Farmers Association, told TOI.”For an acre of sugarcane cultivation, we spent 2.25 lakh.
Officials are conducting surveys only at the paddy fields after the recent rain. So far, no one has visited the sugarcane fields. We urge agriculture and revenue department officials to conduct surveys about the damaged sugarcane crops as well,” he added.Meanwhile, a section of farmers handed over a petition over the issue to collector B Priyanka Pankajam during the grievance redressal meeting on Monday.
Thanjavur joint director of agriculture Vidhya said, “So far, very few damages have been reported from sugarcane fields. However, we will review the condition with the help of field officers and send a report. Farmers will be compensated for their loss in case of severe damages.”
