LanzaTech And ArcelorMittal Achieve Milestone In Sustainable Ethanol Production
LanzaTech and ArcelorMittal have reached a milestone in their partnership, with the Steelanol facility in Ghent, Belgium, now producing ethanol in volumes sufficient for efficient transportation via barge. This ethanol, made from industrial emissions using LanzaTech’s carbon recycling technology, will be purified and sold to customers in sectors like fragrance and home care
LanzaTech, a pioneering company in carbon recycling, and ArcelorMittal, a global leader in steel and mining, have jointly announced a significant milestone in their sustainable ethanol production efforts.
Ethanol produced at ArcelorMittal‘s Steelanol facility in Ghent, Belgium, has reached a volume that now allows for efficient transportation via barge.
Earlier this month, LanzaTech received the first barge shipment of this ethanol. The ethanol is currently being transported for purification and subsequent sale to LanzaTech’s CarbonSmart customers in the fragrance and home care sectors. https://player.rss.com/carbonsations/1458891?theme=light
This achievement marks a crucial step forward in the strategic partnership between LanzaTech and ArcelorMittal to establish a robust European supply chain for sustainably produced ethanol within the region.
The Steelanol facility at ArcelorMittal employs cutting-edge carbon recycling technology developed by LanzaTech to convert carbon-rich industrial emissions from its blast furnace into high-quality ethanol.
The facility, a pioneering endeavor within the European steel industry, commenced ethanol production in 2023. The produced ethanol can be utilized in various applications, including direct sale to fuel markets, further purification for diverse consumer products such as clothing, personal care items, and packaging.

With an annual production capacity of 80 million liters, the ArcelorMittal Steelanol plant is poised to meet approximately half of Belgium’s current ethanol demand. The facility is expected to contribute significantly to environmental sustainability by reducing carbon emissions at the Ghent plant by 125,000 tonnes per year.
This aligns with the European Union’s ambitious 2030 Climate Target Plan, which aims to achieve a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by the end of the decade. Project collaborators include Primetals Technologies and ERM (formerly E4tech), with valuable support from CINEA, the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency.
“This production milestone represents an important step toward treating industrial emissions as raw materials—rather than waste—to profitably support European supply chains in the creation of everyday products,” said Dr. Jennifer Holmgren, Chair and CEO of LanzaTech. “ArcelorMittal has long been a leader in decarbonizing the steel industry, and we look forward to building upon this achievement and expanding our operations together as we continue to advance a circular economy.”
