The Andhra Pradesh State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited (APSCSCL) and the Krishna police have launched inquiry into the alleged missing of rice stocks from a private warehouse that was taken for lease by the APSCSCL in Machilipatnam.
P. Jaya Sudha, owner of JS Warehouse Godown and wife of former Minister Perni Venkataramaiah (Nani), had given the warehouse on lease to APSCSCL, which stored fortified rice in it. However, during an inspection it was found that PDS rice weighing about 185 tonnes, worth ₹89.72 lakh, was missing.
Subsequently, Krishna District Civil Supplies Manager Ch. Padma Devi lodged a complaint with Bandar Taluka police over the missing rice stocks.
According to Civil Supplies officials, 7,719 rice bags had been kept in JS Warehouse Godown, but only 4,011 bags were found at the warehouse during a verification done recently. As many as 3,708 bags were missing. APSCSCL officials then lodged a complaint with the warehouse owner, its manager B. Manas Teja and others for breach of contract and variation in stocks. According to sources, the warehouse owners paid ₹1.07 crore towards penalty to the government.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, Krishna Superintendent of Police R. Gangadhar Rao said that based on the complaint lodged by the APSCSCL officials, a case has been registered and an investigation is on. “The Bandar Taluka police and the APSCSCL officials inspected the warehouse on Monday (December 16),” the SP said.
Meanwhile, Ms. Jaya Sudha filed an anticipatory bail petition in the Machilipatnam court on Monday, and the hearing was posted to December 19.
