Karnataka: Govt taking steps to ensure all sugar mills pay dues to farmers on time
Karnataka’s Agriculture Minister, Shivanand Patil, confirmed that over 99% of sugar mills in the state have made timely payments to sugarcane farmers. As of now, 77 out of 80 mills have settled their dues. The Minister also reassured that there have been no reports of farmer suicides linked to delayed sugarcane arrears. Furthermore, recovery certificates have been issued to district Deputy Commissioners to recover outstanding bills, as per the Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966.
The State government is taking measures to ensure that all sugar mills settle their dues to sugarcane farmers on time, said Minister Shivanand Patil on Tuesday.
The Minister for Agriculture Marketing and Sugar stated that over 99% of the scheduled payments had been made to farmers by mills in the State. He added that as many as 77 of the 80 factories had made payments on time.
In response to a query from member N. Ravikumar, the Minister confirmed that there were no records of farmers’ suicides due to delayed payments of sugarcane arrears. He noted that neither the Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority nor the Social Security and Pensions authority had registered any such cases.
Recovery certificates have been issued to the Deputy Commissioners of the respective districts for the recovery of outstanding sugarcane bills under the Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966, the Minister added.
