Union Minister Nitin Gadkari advocates for ethanol export
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari urged the Indian Sugar & Bioenergy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) to seek government approval for ethanol exports to neighboring countries like Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. He acknowledged export challenges due to government restrictions but encouraged the industry to present its case to relevant ministries. Gadkari emphasized balancing consumer and farmer interests while boosting ethanol production and sugar exports. He highlighted the sugar sector’s role in creating jobs and supporting Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Nitin Gadkari, the Union minister for Road Transport and Highways, today virtually addressed the Indian Sugar & Bioenergy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2024 highlighting sugar and bio-energy roadmap for 2025. He highlighted the importance of sugar industry role in increasing the export and the future innovation in ethanol.
Addressing the AGM, Nitin Gadkari asked the industry to request the government for permission to export ethanol. He said, “I will try to convince, but it is not entirely in my hands. In Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and many other countries, they are working towards adding ethanol in petrol as it is cost-effective and economically viable. As a result, we will have the opportunity to export ethanol to Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sri Lanka. That could also be a good market. I will request the Commerce Ministry for this permission, and ethanol production can be increased.”
On sugar export, Gadkari stated, “I know what kind of problems the industry is facing. While there are good rates for sugar in the international market, but there is no export permission. I believe we need to protect the interests of both consumers and farmers, and we must take preventive measures to ensure the economic viability of the industry. As far as sugar stocks are concerned, I am confident that you will present your case to the Food Ministry and the committee, of which I am also a member. My suggestion is that you present your case to the committee, and we will think on it.”
“We need to create more jobs in the agriculture sector for Atmanirbhar Bharat and the sugar industry plays an important role in it,” he also added.
