Uttar Pradesh : Growing strawberry and ginger along with sugarcane

Amrik Singh practices mixed and organic farming, growing crops such as sugarcane, strawberries, and sesame. By intercropping, he maximizes yields, harvesting up to 500 quintals of sugarcane and 3 quintals of urad per acre. Singh uses organic fertilizers to maintain soil health and increase productivity.

Bijnor: Amrik Singh, a farmer from Prempuri-Rasoolabad village, has been practising organic and mixed farming for nearly 12 years. In addition to sugarcane, paddy, and wheat, he grows crops like strawberries, ginger, tomatoes, radish, urad (black gram), cauliflower, sesame, and mustard, earning extra income.

Amrik Singh explained that he planted strawberries, urad, and sesame in August. After these crops sprouted, he sowed sugarcane in ridges. From one acre of land, he harvests 300 to 500 quintals of sugarcane, 3 quintals of urad, and about 1.5 quintals of sesame. All these crops are ready for harvest by March.

In this farming method, crops like garlic, mustard, chickpeas, and onions can also be planted with sugarcane in November. Additionally, crops such as ginger, turmeric, and colocasia can be grown. From one acre, farmers can produce 7 to 8 quintals of ginger, 8 to 10 quintals of turmeric, and 8 to 10 quintals of colocasia, providing good returns. Amrik Singh uses organic fertilizers made from cow dung and other natural materials to enrich the soil and boost productivity.
