Biofuel plants to be set up in all cooperative sugar mills: Haryana CM Saini

Haryana’s Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has directed officials to set up biofuel briquetting plants in all cooperative sugar mills to improve financial health. Following Kaithal’s successful pilot, other mills will produce bagasse briquettes for thermal plants. Cooperative mills crushed 113.56 lakh quintals of sugarcane this season, producing 9.18 lakh quintals of sugar with an 8.70% recovery rate.

Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has instructed officials to set up biofuel briquetting plants in all cooperative sugar mills across the state to improve their financial health. Chairing a review meeting of the Naraingarh Sugar Mill, the Chief Minister emphasised the benefits of the initiative, highlighting its potential to transform the cooperative sugar industry.

The Chief Minister noted that the Kaithal Cooperative Sugar Mill had successfully launched a pilot project, producing and selling bagasse briquettes to thermal power plants and other consumers within Haryana. “This has significantly improved the financial condition of the sugar mill,” he said, directing officials to replicate this model across all cooperative sugar mills.

He also urged officials to explore every possible measure to eliminate losses in the cooperative sugar sector. Expressing satisfaction with the steps taken by the government, CM Saini commended the improvement in the efficiency of cooperative sugar mills and the benefits accruing to farmers.

Officials reported that during the current crushing season (2024-25), up to January 13, cooperative sugar mills under Sugarfed crushed 113.56 lakh quintals of sugarcane, producing 9.18 lakh quintals of sugar with an average sugar recovery rate of 8.70%.

In the previous crushing season (2023-24), sugar mills in Rohtak, Sonepat, Jind, Palwal, Meham, Kaithal and Gohana collectively saved 7.14 lakh quintals of bagasse, earning additional revenue of Rs 1,630.31 lakh. Sugarfed chairman Dharambir Singh Dagar shared suggestions for further improving the financial status of sugar mills during the meeting.
