Venezuelan rice production increases by 26% in 2024

In 2024, Venezuela’s rice sector saw a 26% increase in planted area, reaching 120,000 hectares. The yield was approximately 5,000 kg per hectare, with a goal to surpass 100,000 kg in the near future. The production, concentrated in Guarico and Portuguesa states, relies on favorable climatic and soil conditions, and there’s a need for more investment in the sector.

The balance of 2024 was very favourable for the rice sector, because, according to the president of the Venezuelan Rice Producers Association (Fevearroz), Jose Luis Perez, 120,000 hectares were planted in 2024, 26 per cent more than in 2023.

He stated that the yield on these 120,000 hectares in 2024 was approximately five thousand kilogrammes per hectare. Jose Luis Perez also mentioned the need to attract more investment in the sector. For the president, the goal is to exceed 100,000 kilos in the short term. This is reported by Venezolana de Television (VTV), a partner of TV BRICS.

It is worth noting that rice in Venezuela is grown in the Central and Western Plains of the country. Production is concentrated in the states of Guarico and Portuguesa, where climatic and soil conditions are more favourable. Rice cultivation takes place during the rainy and dry seasons.
