Karnataka ,Annapoorna scheme: Concerns raised overnon-distribution of free rice to senior citizens
Iranna Kadadi, chairman of the FCI Consultative Committee, expressed concern that the Karnataka government has not provided a list of senior citizens eligible for 10kg of free rice under the Annapoorna scheme. He noted that while the Union government allocates rice, the state distributes it. Kadadi emphasized that Karnataka’s rice production exceeds local demand, with ample storage capacity in FCI godowns.
Mysuru: Under the Annapoorna scheme of the Union govt, senior citizens are entitled to receive 10kg of free rice, but the state govt has not provided the list of eligible individuals, said Iranna Kadadi, chairman of the Consultative Committee of the Food Corporation of India (FCI).Speaking to reporters after a state-level consultative meeting on Thursday, Kadadi expressed his concern: “It is unfortunate that the state govt has not yet provided the list of senior citizens who are eligible for 10kg of free rice under the Annapoorna scheme.”Kadadi, who is a BJP Rajya Sabha member, said the 5 kg of free rice currently distributed to people in Karnataka comes from the Union govt. “Every year, 24 lakh tonnes of rice are allocated to the state by the Union govt. While the rice is provided by the central govt, it is distributed under the state govt’s label,” he explained. “Karnataka has the capacity to provide an additional 10 kg of rice to its citizens, as the state produces over 50 lakh tonnes of rice annually, which is more than sufficient to meet local demand.”The MP further highlighted the region’s infrastructure, noting that FCI Karnataka has 63 godowns with a total storage capacity of 10,50,831 metric tonnes (MT). “This exceeds the mandated capacity. In addition, FCI Karnataka is planning to construct six new storage facilities under the Asset Mentation scheme, which will add 1,74,510 MT of storage capacity across locations in Hubballi, Shivamogga, Raichuru, Ballari, Maddur, Mysuru, and Kushalnagar,” he stated.
