ISMA releases second advance estimates of sugar production for 2024-25 season
ISMA’s second advance estimate for the 2024-25 sugar season predicts a gross production of 310.2 lakh tons and net production of 272.7 lakh tons. Lower yields in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, due to red rot and excessive rainfall, have impacted output. By January 31, 2025, 165 lakh tons of sugar was produced, compared to 187.15 lakh tons last year.
ISMA (Indian Sugar and Bio Energy Manufacturers Association) has released the second advance estimates of sugar production for 2024-25 Sugar Season.
As per release, ISMA procured satellite images of cane area in the 3rd week of Jan’ 2025. The satellite pictures have given a good idea of the area already harvested and remaining unharvested area in the fields across the country.
According to the ISMA, based on the images of harvested and balance area, field visits, historical trends, weather, current trend of yields and sugar recoveries achieved till now, as also expected yield/sugar recovery in the balance period of the sugar season, estimated sugar production for the season 2024-25 was discussed in the Executive Committee meeting of ISMA held on 31st January’2025.
ISMA released its 2nd advance estimates of sugar production for 2024-25 SS as gross production of around 310.2 lac tons and a net production of around 272.7 lac tons after an estimated sugar diversion of around 37.5 lac tons. Total sugar diversion figures have been adjusted based on the state wise ethanol supply allocations and expected crush.
As per ISMA, projected sugar balance for 2024-25 Sugar Season
ISMA stated that as per the Government data, domestic sugar consumption in the first 3 months of the 2024-25 SS (Oct-2024 to Dec-2024) is around 65 lac tons which is almost 5 lac tons lower that the cumulative sales quota of 69.5 lac tons for the corresponding period.
It was noted that sugarcane yield and sugar recovery in the state of Uttar Pradesh is lower than last year primarily due to wide spread red rot infestation and varietal replacement resulting in lower estimated sugar production in the state, the release further added.
Similarly, two other major states of Maharashtra and Karnataka are getting lower cane yields per unit area. The main reason for this is onset of early flowering in several cane growing regions due to wet field conditions as a result of higher rainfall received during SW monsoon / post monsoon thereby suppressing sun shine hours owing to cloud cover throughout the monsoon season, as per ISMA.
Supported by a favourable southwest monsoon in 2024, planting for 2025-26 season has reportedly improved over this year in Maharashtra and Karnataka. As a result, the 2025-26 crushing season is set to begin earlier in October 2025, with an estimated closing stock of around 62.5 lakh tons by the end of the season, which is expected to be more than adequate.
Update on sugar production upto 31st January’2025:
Meanwhile, around 165 lac tons of sugar has been produced till 31st January’2025 against around 187.15 lac tons produced last year on the corresponding date. However, this year around 500 factories are operating against 520 factories which operated last year.
