India’s sugar mills got a reprieve when the government permitted the export of 1 million tonnes of sugar but subsequent developments may be worrying to investors in sugar stocks. In the previous sugar season, the government had not opened up the quota for exports, in a bid to ensure adequate availability of domestic sugar to keep prices in check. After some speculation on whether it would reopen the export window at all this season, it did crack.
