Madhya Pradesh : Illegally stored PDS rice seized in early morning raid

In Indore, food department officials raided a warehouse and seized hundreds of quintals of rice intended for BPL families under the Public Distribution System. The rice was being illegally stored and transported to Gujarat. The driver was apprehended, and the rice was traced back to individuals previously charged for similar offenses. The warehouse was sealed.

Indore: Acting against ‘ration mafia’ in the district, food department officials seized hundreds of quintals of rice from a warehouse that was meant for BPL families under public distribution system (PDS) early Tuesday morning.District food controller Mohan Maru said that a raid was conducted at around 4 am at a warehouse, targeting illegal storage of rice that was meant for BPL families. “Approximately 800 loose bags of rice and a truck were seized from a warehouse located in Revati Range behind the petrol pump on Sanwer Road. The truck was preparing to transport the rice to Gujarat.” he said.”The food department team had conducted surveillance till late in the night and dispatched a team at 4 am to intercept a truck (MH20 GC3192). The driver, identified as Karan, a resident of Dhar district, was caught.

He revealed that the rice belonged to Satish Agrawal and Sanjay Gupta. The seized truckload was handed over to the warehouse corporation’s facility in Rau,” the food controller said.”Agrawal had previously faced action under the Prevention of black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980. Three FIRs were registered against him while he was also booked under National Security Act for illegal storage and trading of PDS rice,” Maru said. The accused used to buy rice from consumers at Rs15-17 per kg through auto drivers in the streets and sell it to different industries at higher rates. “The warehouse, owned by one Satish Mittal, storing around 400 quintal of the illegally hoarded rice has been sealed,” he said.
