Maharashtra : Mahayuti govt sanctioned 31.6cr subsidy for 14 sugar mills last year

The Mahayuti government in Maharashtra has approved a ₹31.6 crore subsidy for 14 sugar factories, both private and cooperative, for electricity generation from bagasse. The subsidy, set at ₹1.5 per unit of electricity sold to Mahavitaran, was sanctioned across party lines. Major beneficiaries include Daund Sugar (₹9.5 crore), Karmaveer Ankushrao Tope factory (₹4.2 crore), and Baramati Agro (₹3.3 crore). The move aims to support sugar mills financially, though it comes amid rising state debt and pre-election welfare spending.
Mumbai: The Mahayuti govt sanctioned a subsidy of 31.6 crore to 14 sugar factories in the private and cooperative sector. The subsidy was earlier announced at the rate of Rs 1.5 per unit of electricity produced by sugar factories from bagasse and sold to the state utility Mahavitaran. The subsidy was cleared on March 3 last year for the period of one year. The subsidy was approved for sugar mills across party lines. The private mill Daund Sugar, which is said to be linked to deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar, is set to receive a subsidy worth Rs 9.5 crore under the scheme.A subsidy of Rs 4.2 crore was approved for the Karmaveer Ankushrao Tope cooperative sugar factory in Jalna which is linked to NCP (SP) leader Rajesh Tope. The Baramati Agro factory, linked to NCP (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar, was cleared for a subsidy of Rs 3.3 crore. The Vilas cooperative sugar factory, linked to Congress politician Amit Deshmukh, was cleared for a subsidy of Rs 1 crore. The Vithal cooperative sugar factory in Pandharpur, linked to NCP (SP) leader Abhijit Patil, was sanctioned a subsidy of Rs 1.2 crore.
Bagasse is a by-product from sugarcane crushing. The decision to provide the subsidy was meant to encourage the production of electricity by sugar mills and also to help generate additional income for the factories. However, after the subsidy was cleared in March, the Mahayuti govt announced a host of pre-poll sops, which pushed its debt to Rs 7.8 lakh crore and led to additional supplementary demands worth 1.3 lakh crore to help account for expenses outside the budget. Among the welfare schemes announced ahead of the assembly elections last year was the Ladki Bahin Yojana, which will cost the state Rs 46,000 crore annually.
