Uttar Pradesh-Bijnor: Sugar mills issued notice for delayed cane payment to farmers

Sugar mills in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh, have been issued notices to clear ₹262.56 crore in outstanding payments to sugarcane farmers. The delayed payments come amid reduced sugarcane yields due to disease in variety 0238. Despite higher crushing volumes this season, financial losses and an early end to the crushing season have impacted farmers significantly.
Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh: Sugar mills in the region that have failed to make timely payments to sugarcane farmers have been issued notices by the Sugarcane Commissioner, DM, and District Cane Officer (DCO). The notices instruct the mills to clear the outstanding payments within a specified timeframe, reported Amar Ujala.
This year, sugarcane production has been affected due to the widespread disease in the dominant sugarcane variety, 0238. The reduced yield has resulted in financial losses for farmers, and the sugarcane crushing season is ending earlier than usual.
As of February 21st, ten sugar mills in the district had crushed 760.11 lakh quintals of sugarcane, compared to 722.18 lakh quintals during the same period last season. The total outstanding payment to farmers from these mills stands at ₹262.56 crore.
