Karnataka : Sugar mills permitted to crush only sugarcane designated within their jurisdiction, says Mandya DC

Mandya Deputy Commissioner Kumara has directed sugar mills to pay sugarcane farmers within 15 days of supply to prevent delays seen last year. He emphasized compliance with jurisdictional crushing limits and timely factory preparations. With 15,000 labourers expected, mills must provide basic amenities and ensure timely wages. Mills aim to start operations by late June, pending government approval.

Mandya, Karnataka: Deputy Commissioner Kumara on Monday directed sugar mills to ensure that payments to sugarcane farmers are made within 15 days of supply. Speaking at a meeting with representatives from sugar mills at his office, he noted that numerous complaints were received last year regarding delayed payments and emphasized that such issues must not recur this year.

“To avoid grievances, payments must be made on time,” he stated firmly.

DC Kumara stressed that mills are permitted to crush only the sugarcane allocated within their designated jurisdiction and that this regulation must be strictly followed. He urged factory management to resolve any internal issues without delay.

He also mentioned that five sugar mills in the district have completed their preparations for the upcoming crushing season. All mills are expected to begin cane-crushing operations as per the date set by the Sugar Commissioner. Additionally, mills must obtain renewal certificates before commencing operations.

With approximately 15,000 labourers expected to arrive from other districts and states for cane harvesting, the DC instructed mills to ensure the provision of basic amenities such as drinking water and toilets for the workers. Considering the heightened risk of infectious diseases during the monsoon, he emphasized the importance of health awareness among the labour force. He also insisted that wages must be paid on time, in accordance with agreed terms.

CD Gangadhar, president of the MySugar Sugar Factory, informed that data from all sugar mills is being compiled and will be submitted to the government, requesting permission to commence the crushing season by the end of June.
