Viterra ranks as Argentina’s top agricultural exporter

Viterra led Argentina’s agri-exports for the third year in a row, shipping 13.55Mt in 2023–24, followed by Cargill and COFCO. Soybean and corn exports rose sharply, while wheat exports plunged 61% due to prior drought. Viterra topped in soybeans and sunflower; ADM led corn; Bunge in wheat; ACA in sorghum; and Quilmes in barley.
Viterra Ltd. tops a list of agricultural commodities exporters in Argentina for the third consecutive season following the close of the 2023-24 marketing year, according to the Rosario Grain Exchange.
Based on the Foreign Sales Declarations (DJVE) records, the exchange said the top 10 companies in tonnes were:
- Viterra, 13.55 million
- Cargill, 11.37 million
- COFCO, 10.35 million
- Bunge Global SA, 8.72 million
- AGD, 8.65 million
- Louis Dreyfus Co., 8.57 million
- ADM, 8.04 million
- ACA, 5.65 million
- Molinos Agro, 5.15 million
- CHS, Inc. 1.37 million
The top three companies accounted for nearly 39% of the 89.82 million tonnes of exports for the main agricultural crops during the 2023-24 cycle, which ended in March, the exchange said.
Soybean exports totaled 40.88 million tonnes, 29% above the average for the past three seasons. Corn followed with 37.86 million tonnes declared in DJVE records, 16% above the three-year average.
In contrast, wheat exports showed a sharp decline with only 3.62 million tonnes exported, falling 61% compared to the previous cycle and 70% compared to the average for the last three seasons. The low volume is partly due to the impact of drought on 2022-23 production and rolled-over export declarations from previous seasons, the exchange noted.
For barley, DJVE totaled 3.83 million tonnes, on par with the previous year, while sunflower showed a more marked improvement, with 2.37 million tonnes recorded. Sorghum registered a significant rebound, reaching 1.26 million tonnes, although it stayed below the three-year average.
The top shippers of each commodity in tonnes were:
- Soybeans: Viterra, 8.46 million
- Corn: ADM, 6.97 million
- Wheat: Bunge, 760,000
- Barley: Cerveceria y Malteria Quilmes, 670,000
- Sunflower: Viterra, 990,000
- Sorghum: ACA, 320,000.
