Ban on maize seed imports from South Africa lifted

Namibia has lifted its temporary ban on maize seed imports from South Africa, originally imposed due to concerns over Goss’s Wilt. The Ministry of Agriculture updated phytosanitary import requirements to prevent the disease’s spread. While imports resume, authorities urge strict adherence to new guidelines, warning that any contaminated consignments remain prohibited to protect local crops.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform (MAFWLR) on Tuesday announced the immediate lifting of the ban on the importation and in-transit movement of maize seeds for planting from South Africa.

The temporary ban was initially imposed as a precautionary measure following the detection of Goss’s Wilt in maize seed originating from South Africa.

In response, the ministry in a statement said it has reviewed and updated its phytosanitary import requirements to safeguard against the introduction of this and other harmful plant pathogens.

While the restriction has been lifted, the Ministry strongly urges all importers and relevant stakeholders to exercise heightened vigilance and strictly adhere to the updated phytosanitary import requirements.

These measures are deemed essential to prevent the introduction and spread of Goss’s Wilt into Namibia. Importers are specifically reminded that the movement of any maize seed consignments suspected of contamination remains strictly prohibited.

The ministry, meanwhile, has appealed to all stakeholders and the public to comply with all phytosanitary measures and best practices to ensure the continued health and safety of crops and agricultural resources.
