Bangladesh : Prices of rice, vegetables go up, causing concern for consumers

Rice prices have surged by Tk 6–8 per kg over the past two weeks, driven by mill-gate hikes of Tk 250–300 per sack. Despite a strong Boro harvest, coarse rice now sells at Tk 55–56, while premium varieties reach up to Tk 90. Vegetable prices also spiked by Tk 10–20/kg amid supply disruptions from heavy rain.

The prices of almost all types of rice and vegetables have increased in a week, intensifying owes of the consumers.

Rice prices went up by around Tk 3.0-4.0 a kg further in a week, and by Tk 6.0 to 8.0 a kg in the last two weeks, according to the trading sources.

Traders said rice prices were rising across the country as millers started raising prices.

The price of a 50-kg sack of rice had gone up by as much as Tk 250-300 at the mill gates in two weeks.

Because of this, rice is now being sold at Tk 6.0 to 8 more per kg compared to prices before Eid-ul-Azha in the retail market, depending on varieties and quality.

Currently, coarse rice is selling at Tk 55-56 a kg, medium rice like Brridhan 28 for Tk 64-Tk 66 a kg, finer Jeerashail/Miniket Tk 78 to Tk 85 per kg, and Najirhsail Tk 80 to Tk 90 a kg.

At Mohammadpur Krishi Market in the city, trader Motassim Ali said all kinds of rice went up by as much as Tk 5.0-Tk 6.0 a kg in the mokams (milling hubs) like Nilphamari, Dinajpur, Naogaon, and Kushtia.

He said it was shocking that prices of rice were increasing during the peak harvesting season while production is also robust as per government data.

According to the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), the harvest was almost completed last week while the country expects to get above 22 million tonnes of rice from this Boro season.

Meanwhile, prices of almost all vegetables have also gone up.

At Rayer Bazar in the city, vegetable vendor Ripon Sheikh said vegetable increased by Tk 10-Tk 20 a kg in a week in the wholesale market amid a surge at the district level for heavy rain.

Country beans, yard-long bean, teasel gourd, and bitter gourd are now selling for Tk 80-Tk 100 a kg, papaya, pointed gourd, and okra Tk 60-70 a kg, sponge gourd and ridge gourd are selling at Tk 65-80 a kg. Tomato and carrot prices increased to Tk 140-160 a kg at the retail level.

Prices of beef, chicken, eggs and cultured fish remained static while reverine fish showed a further hike last week, according to market sources.
