Uttar Pradesh plans push for maize: New varieties, higher yields, and ethanol focus

Uttar Pradesh aims to boost maize production by introducing high-yield varieties and improved seeds in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Maize Research and Mexico’s International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center. A recent meeting at Krishi Bhawan explored ethanol production from maize and outlined new projects on seed production and marketing, with research institutes providing scientific support.

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh is set to increase maize production and introduce new high-yield varieties of the crop. Farmers will be provided with improved maize seeds as part of this initiative. The state government will work in partnership with the Indian Institute of Maize Research, Ludhiana (Punjab), and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico, reported Amar Ujala.

A detailed discussion on maize production took place on Friday at Krishi Bhawan, where vice-chancellors of agricultural universities, representatives from various institutions, officials from the Agriculture Department, and scientists from the research institutes participated.

The meeting also focused on the potential of ethanol production from maize, exploring its role in boosting agricultural-based energy solutions.

To support this initiative, the Agriculture Department will develop several new projects related to seed production and marketing. The research institutes will play a key role in assisting with these projects.

Principal Secretary of the Agriculture Department, Ravindra, said scientists shared valuable suggestions during the meeting to ensure the success of the program.
