UNICA: Sugarcane ethanol production slips in early June, corn ethanol production continues to grow

Ethanol production in Brazil’s south-central region fell sharply in early June due to heavy rains, with sugarcane crushing down 21.5% year-on-year, UNICA reported. Total ethanol output dropped 14.2% this season, though corn ethanol rose 22%. Ethanol sales also declined 13.9% in early June. Despite the dip in hydrous ethanol, anhydrous sales grew slightly overall since April.

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, has announced the sugarcane harvest was negatively impacted by rains during the first half of June. Total ethanol production was down, but corn ethanol production continued to grow.

Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 38.78 million metric tons of sugarcane during the first half of June, down 21.49% when compared the same period of last year. Total sugarcane harvesting since the beginning of the current harvest season, which began April 1, reached 190.94 million metric tons, down 14.33% when compared to the same period of 2024.

Mills in the region produced 1.78 billion liters (470.23 million gallons) of ethanol during the first half of June. Production included 1.1 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 17.97%, and 677.59 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 26.97%. Corn ethanol accounted for 256.98 million liters, or 20% of total production during the two-week period, up 16.54% when compared to the same period of last year.

Total ethanol production since the start of the current harvest season reached 7.5 billion liters, down 14.21% when compared to the same period of last year. Production included 4.94 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 13.02%, and 2.56 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 16.41%. Corn ethanol production accounted for 1.8 billion liters of production, up 22.02% when compared to the same period of last year.

Mills in the region sold 1.26 billion liters of ethanol during the first half of June, down 13.92% when compared to the same period of last year. Sales included 460.01 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 10.18%, and 803.95 million liters of hydrous ethanol, down 15.93%.

Domestic sales for the first half of June included 779.9 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 16.58%, and 442.61 million liters of anhydrous ethanol, down 11.64%

Total ethanol sales since the beginning of the current harvest season reached 7.02 billion liters, down 4.47%. Sales included 4.52 billion liters of hydrous ethanol, down 7.41%, and 2.51 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol, up 1.32%.
